Working Through Trauma Related Stress
Trauma-related stress
Client stressors related to trauma
Signs of traumatic stress in your clients and strategies to address the stressors
Watch the video talk with Dr. Robert Sapolsky and read the short overview of trauma’s relation to the brain, signs of traumatic stress, and strategies to address trauma-related stress. Note that this reading is specified to children as this is the field of expertise for Stuart Shanker, particularly in regard to helping students self-regulate. Find resources from his work on his website https://self-reg.ca/
Reflection:
After reading through this short overview, contemplate a recurring theme that you see related to trauma and educating through a trauma informed lens. Write about this in the general slack channel for this course.

Trauma-Informed Framework
Pemberton et al. (2021) outline a useful framework for a trauma informed framework on pages 189-192. You may notice that some of the recurring themes in this framework keep cropping up throughout the course and the literature on trauma.
Read through the framework and rank which principle is most important in your opinion? Why is that?
Carello et al (2014) do a great job of tying theory into practice on pages 163 and 164.
Homework
Something to think about
- How might trauma informed-teaching be beneficial for all students?
- Can you teach without being trauma-informed?
Something to do
- Be intentional with your wording - in your conversations, be conscious of what you will say and re-frame the wording. For example, “My student is resistant to do the exercise” to “My student is curious do the exercise”.
Something to write about, answer the following questions in a journal note and submit to your personal slack channel.
- Are you willing to make changes in your classroom/therapy clinic... to foster a sense of safety among traumatized students? Why would you make these changes? Why wouldn’t you make these changes?
- Read through the articles in this section and write 2-300 words connecting the Pemberton reading to Carello.
